She's more British than cricket, crumpets, Big Ben, or the Beatles, more admired than the royal family. She's the English nanny, and when it comes to child-raising, there's nothing quite like her. Now, in Nanny Wisdom, two hip young nannies combine their classical English training with the day-to-day knowledge they've gained as child-care professionals to offer expert advice on raising healthy, happy, and well-behaved children from birth through the preschool years.

Justine Walsh and Kim Nicholson have been professional nannies for more than a decade, and they have worked with a wide variety of families. The entertaining and extremely readable text is filled with personal stories, sidebars that highlight important advice, and easy-to-prepare recipes. It was okay - maybe I'd like it more if this was the first book I had read on the topic. It gave a bunch of great recipes, talked about how to hire a nanny, and gave a clear overarching philosophy. However, I think it was not detailed enough (I like lists and a lot of instruction) in terms of dealing with issues. It was a lot of "buy her Cinderella something if that means she'll eat/sleep/potty train/etc" which I don't think is a great idea.

3.5 stars for me. Lots of gems in it, but I think some of the tough areas of parenting were brushed over. For example, it talks on sleep and how it is a top issue, it goes over the basics of good sleep habits, but in terms of the 'what to do' I think it would leave most parents wanting more information. I'm glad I read it, but like all parenting books, there are bits and pieces I did and didn't like.

I often pick up parenting books at the library to browse. After finding a section where lambswool snugglers and foam wedges were "Nanny Recommended and Approved" (hello, SIDS anyone?) and another section where they discussed the intricacies of the british nanny classes interactions in the park, I realized that I wasn't going to glean anything useful fromn this one.

I thought this was an excellent book. A friend gave it to me as a gift. Two nannies with years of experience talk about all the things they learned taking care of children. There are tips from babies to teenagers. And there are a bunch of good recipes and games as well.
