Athough outdated now since so many more novels of this genre have been published since this overview, an interesting survey of this genre at the time. Some remain classics.

An interesting critique of stories dealing with nuclear disaster. The author 'reviews' short stories, novellas, and novels, some well known, others not so well known. Writers ranging from those who wrote bible stories through Mary Shelly, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov to contemporary (i.e. 1980s) have written about apocalypses and post-apocalypse times. Dowling's eight chapters have cogently categorized nuclear disaster fiction. He introduces each chapter with thoughts on the genre before using the stories as examples quoting from some of them. While a difficult read (may help with one's insomnia) it is a scholarly work on a genre that doesn't get the scholarly attention it deserves.
