This is a great book for someone who's brand new to amateur radio and wants to find out more about it. It's not really a manual in the usual sense of the word. You'll get a general idea of the procedures and how to conduct yourself on the air, but since everybody does it a little differently you'll eventually develop your own style. Each chapter covers various aspects of ham radio from general protocols for talking on the radio, emergency communications, traffic handling, HF, digital and FCC regulations governing amateur radio.

You can read it all at once, or just read the chapters that interest you, and then go back to read other chapters later as you progress along. Even if you're not into ham radio (yet), it's an interesting read to find out the wide variety of activities hams participate in.
