I bought Maria von Blucher's Corpus Christi to read about her son-in-law, James Downing. I happily read about him and proceeded to enjoy the whole book.
Von Blucher moved from Berlin to Corpus Christi in 1849, and her letters to her parents in Germany span the next thirty years. She describes the history and development of Corpus Christi, and expresses her concern for the safety of her growing young family. Much like Anne Bradstreet's poetry of early America, von Blucher's writing reveals the heart of a mother, providing the putty that fills the cracks in understanding left by merely relating historical facts and events.
