This is essentially a travel diary as Ferdinand Roemer visited Galveston, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, New Braunfels, Fredericksburg and regions along the San Saba River and the vicinity of Waco (and points between). At this time travel was very rough and dangerous and many towns were struggling outposts of civilization. The descriptions of vast untouched land, privations and disease are worth reading for anyone curious about how Texas was settled. The descriptions of geology and botany were not interesting to me but for other readers would be fascinating.
This is an unbelievable journey back in time to the beginnings of settlements in the Texas Hill Country, and beautiful descriptions of the plants and animals that were encountered along the way by the man who took the journey.
