I picked this book up at the NLB Big Book Giveaway and it was probably the best out of the haul I got 😆

Quite a comprehensive, informative guide into several key art movements of the 19th century, including realism, landscape painting, symbolism, impressionism and art nouveau. I loved the many pictures although I did have to frequently google for works which were named but not depicted. Overall can definitely say I came away with a greater understanding of art for someone who is a novice in the subject.

Solidly anchored by research, this concise history of French art during the 2nd half of the 19th century hits all the high spots and mentions all the main players ... places such art firmly in the context of West European culture ... lavishly illustrated ... perfect introduction or refresher ...
