Walking Home: From Eden to Emmaus

Rate this book
Retellings of the "walking stories" of Scripture and how they unpack the truths about spiritual life. Jesus walks everywhere with his disciples―always arriving, departing, on the way somewhere else. Adam and Eve walked out of the garden, Lot and his daughters walked out of Sodom, Abraham and Isaac walked to Mt. Moriah, the Israelites walked for forty years to the promised land, the Prodigal Son walked home barefoot, the disciples walked to Emmaus. The spiritual life is oftentimes about putting one foot in front of another, always on the way, never home, until crossing another new threshold. However, the point of all our walking―whether tedious or joyous, rambling or goal-oriented―is getting home, as this splendid author illustrates in this reflective work.

This is a must read book. Each chapter starts with scripture, from Eden to Emmaus. Margaret uses the scripture as the basis of her reflection. I met Margaret at Kanuga Conference Center. She autographed my book for me.

She writes like she speaks. She ties the stories and events from the Old & New Testaments to her life and the world in which we live. I read a chapter or two a day as part of my daily prayer session. I spent time reflecting how what I read pertained to my life.

Reading with my church...liked the walking theme. Worked best when she imagined various walks in Biblical times, with historical details. Trying to compare it to her own (admittedly privileged 21st Century) life fell flat (and she sort of indicates this). Might like to read one of her books about prayer.

I was an okay book. I felt it moved rather slow and was really a book about her personal reflections more so than Bible based. It would be a great book to read a long side a daily devotional, but not something to sit and read in one sitting.
