Walter Ernest Butler was an occultist and the Founder and first Director of Servants of the Light in Britain. He worked closely with Dion Fortune in the Society of the Inner Light.
Even though better than the author's first book ("Magic: Its Ritual, Power and Purpose"), it still retains the negative characteristics that degrade this one from being a good, interesting book to a "it was ok". It has many interesting aspects, points of view and ideas, but the essance of new age writing is very present. The author frequently mentions facts that are clearly outside his field of expertise (physics or linguistics for example), using a pseudo-scientific writing, failing to meet its rules. He makes far-fetched claims (presented as scientific facts) without providing the references and at some points he makes claims that are false altogether. Apart from that, this is still an interesting book, as long as the reader aproaches it with a critical eye.
Its a good book for its time . Lot of the staff he writes about is all in the new edge and a lot of it miss understand . The magnetism for example is mostly hypnosis . not saying there is not life force energy (prana , Od ) but the exercise with the ring on and off is called anchor in the hypnosis now a day . overall I enjoyed reading it .
