She'd come back to him. That was police detective Sam Garrett's first thought. For over a year he'd denied that U.S. Marshal Dallas Kittridge was more to him than his best friend's widow. More than a beautiful woman who'd turned to him in sorrow, and whose touch had erupted into a passion he couldn't forget-- or speak about.
Now the warmth of the Christmas season contrasted sharply with the case they were racing to solve. Because Dallas had returned to find the killer of a protected witness, not to fight for a future with Sam. But as the case got hotter, so did their desires. And then they broke their silence ....
A native Sooner, romance author Debra S. Cowan was born in Idabel, Oklahoma, and later moved to the Tulsa area. Like many writers, Debra made up stories in her head as a child. Her B.A. in English was obtained with the intention of following family tradition and becoming a school teacher, but after she wrote her first novel, there was no looking back.
An avid history buff, Debra enjoys traveling. She has visited places as diverse as Europe and Honduras, where she and her husband served as part of a medical mission team. Debra still lives in Oklahoma with her husband.
She is a member of Romance Writers of America and is the Past President of Oklahoma Romance Writers of America. Her writing has been called "fast-paced", "vivid", "emotionally satisfying", and distinguished by "strong, compelling characters". Romantic Times Magazine says, "Her stories have the charm, tenderness and sensuality that captivate and enchant." Affaire de Coeur predicts, "Cowan shows the beautiful promise of a rising star." And The Literary Times urges, "Treat yourself to a novel by Debra Cowan. You'll be glad you did."
Rating 3.5 This book was quite emotion filled, mainly guilt, anger and hurt. We know that Sam has been struggling after the death of his partner and has transferred from Vice to Homicide, but what we didn't know is his conflicting feelings towards his partner's wife Dallas.
He wanted her from the moment he met her but didn't do anything about it, she was married and then Brad died and things got all messed up, he felt guilty and then he and Dallas had sex and he felt more guilty as if he had wished Brad dead and angry since he thought Dallas thought he was Brad and used him. So, he ignored her for a few days and hooked up with someone else and when he goes to her, he finds her packing her stuff away. This lead to more anger on both their sides, Dallas for him ignoring her and Sam for her moving.
Eighteen months later Sam finds her on the scene of one of his homicides which he suspects is a serial. There are some bad feelings exposed, with Sam trying to apologize for the way he behaved after their night together and Dallas acting all cold, both think they have moved on but they haven't. Dallas after some time finally confronts why she ran because of Sam, she felt guilty that she could sleep with him when her husband had been dead only a few months.
She stays for the case and an obligation she feels for one of the victims and after they spend time together they talk about Sam's guilt over Brad's death, her guilt and though they decide to be friends their chemistry cannot be ignored.
I enjoyed that after acting like juveniles these two actually talk things through and apologize for the hurt they inflicted on each other. Still I am not rating the book any higher since there was just something missing I guess.
Two cops make their way into a new life after the death of her husband, the man who was his partner. Lots of intrigue, multiple murders to solve, and a second chance at love for them both.
