This volume reminds me why I'm usually not a big fan of political thriller: they're just too confusing. The first story in this volume dealt with Nelson Mandela, and wasn't too complicated. The second story was just too complex, with very little action. There's also several pages of text about the M16 Assault Rifle that seemed overly technical for this type of fiction. However, I give the series props for being well researched, and some readers probably really enjoy the technical information.

Not bad, just not my type of stories.

One of the greatest values of the Golgo comics is that backstory is always based on the political situations at the time. Background for the Golgo's adventure is full of details that were deemed important at the time but today would not be found interesting or important.

First story is about Golgo being hired by Nelson Mandela to stop the coup d'etat lead by Mandela's defence minister scheming with remaining apartheid paramilitary forces. Mandela sees this as a grave danger for the new South Africa and asks Golgo to help him prevent the coup and buy Mandela time to implement all the political changes. In a way reminiscent of the Dashiel Hammet's "Red Harvest" Golgo manages to confuse the conspirators and turn them one against the other.

Second story is about international conspiracy for taking control over South China Sea islands (Spratley's) that made one gigantic error in judgement when they decided to use Golgo's name [without him knowing it] as a guarantee to raise the necessary funds. Not happy being put under the spotlight and unwilling to find himself in the cross-hairs of the governments in dispute over the resource rich area Golgo decides to teach the parties involved a lesson.

Excellent book. Art is as always great.

Recommended to fans of thrillers and spy genre.

I honestly have no idea on how I feel about this book. This manga didn't keep me interested because there wasn't much there. So this review will be very short.

What to say about this manga . . . Well, it was okay at best. It wasn’t horrible or anything like that but it wasn’t interesting enough for me to be to want to finish this manga series.

In a nutshell, this is basically James Bond but manga style. The main character is mysterious, a powerful assassin, a ladies man, and a kickass strategist. There’s not much to this guy really. He’s badass and there’s little known about him . . . and that’s about it.

The other characters, they’re not interesting either. I’m not sure you can even all them characters really. They just appear, serve their purpose and that’s it. So as you can see, the character cast is very tiny.

There’s not much to the story either. It’s just the main character taking jobs while also having this mysterious past that no one seems to know. But I do admit that he’s very creative and resourceful on how he gets his job done. Just looking at the strategies he uses is always fun and I do enjoy those parts. The other scenes, not so much.

I can’t find anything else to say about it. It wasn’t bad, you either find it enjoyable or you don’t. For me, I just didn’t find it that interesting.

Two stories. In the first, Golgo is hired by Nelson Mandela to eradicate a group of Boer rebels. There’s a bit of action and way too much talk.

The second story is even worse. Almost no action at all. An international dispute over oil rights on islands in the South China Sea. The ending is amusing but in no way worth the slog to get there, page after page of dense, mostly irrelevant text.

Golgo is at its best when it eschews politics and focuses on action and on the main character, rather than on a parade of talking heads. Unfortunately that appears to be the minority of the stories, the movie notwithstanding. Or it could be the selection made by Viz, idk.

Swear No such Allegiance…

South African president hires G13 to find the perps for the attempted coup de tat, and liquidate them. He went and did what he does best, infiltrate, gather intel, create chaos, then eliminate certain players. Next, G13 learns the truth about G fund, and then he did the unthinkable. Continued fun reading. Still recommended.

Review dos três volumes da JBC lançados em português

Gostei bastante. Acho que os volumes vão progressivamente melhorando, e as desse último são particularmente bem envolventes. Quero ler mais, talvez eu devesse ir atrás das edições em inglês...

Golgo 13 helps out with some very important political causes. As uneven as ever but cool to see Saito taking on some real-world situations.

These are pretty cool. Episodic stories where Golgo the assassin is hired to kill someone or someones, and he always completes his contracts. Stories shift in time and place and always seem to give the reader a bit of historical context that Golgo is entering.
