If you come from a family that's been in America awhile, this probably would be useful guide. It was less so for me, but there are resources mentioned in this book that I didn't know about. If you come from a Polish Jewish family, my advice is to learn how to read Russian script, learn some Polish and hit the online Polish national archives. They've digitized an amazing amount of material. JRI-Poland is extremely useful as well.
