Irgendwie mögen ihn alle - ja, selbst seine Gegner bewundern ihn. Helmut Schmidt, "Mr. Klartext", wird nicht nur aus thematisch-sachlichen Gründen geschätzt, sondern auch emotional, vor allem für seine Heftiges Rauchen in die Fernsehkameras, dabei schnoddrig Fragen beantwortend, das ist der Schmidt, wie wir ihn kennen und lieben. Inzwischen fast schon zum Tabu geworden, drückt ausgerechnet das Rauchen Schmidts populären Widerstand gegen den Zeitgeist aus. Der heute über 90-jährige gilt denen, die ihn noch als Kanzler erlebten, als ein politisch Weiser. Für alle anderen ist er längst "Kult". In Helmut Schmidt finden wir alles, was wir politisch wollen und derzeit nicht Mut, Aufrichtigkeit, Einsatzwillen, Überparteilichkeit, Führungsstärke, Selbstlosigkeit.

Refreshingly different.

Having read a number of books on and by Helmut Schmidt, this book offered a social context that is both insightful and refreshing. I can only imagine how difficult it is to write yet another book about Schmidt, but the author successfully manages to have us look at this cult status personality through the lens of the common person. I was able to imagine many of the Schmidt moments described in this book. I didn't want the book to end.
