For a new generation...a new take on an ageless truth. Dr. Earl Lee addressed these peace-stealers many years ago in his classic Cycle of Victorious Living, which has sold more than 100,000 copies. The cycle he identified continues to motivate, reassure, and inspire today. Scott Daniels, now pastor of the same church Dr. Lee led long ago, uncovers once again these truths from Psalm 37 and shares them in a new voice for today's reader. Dr. Lee's original book is printed in its entirety in the back, and study and reflection questions suitable for small groups or personal use are included in the new revision of the original. Whichever version touches and inspires you, know that you will discover the secrets to living above the turmoil and challenges we face today. The abundant life you hear so much about is actually closer than you might think.
The rest of my notes were made into a PowerPoint since I used it in church last year. It's a VERY good, encouraging book from Psalm 37 from my pastor in California before we moved to Bangkok [T. Scott Daniels].
Ch. 6: Jesus is Lord "God wants to free you where you are, not take you out of the situation." [In other words, "freedom IN things, not freedom FROM things." This was for a Sanskrit scholar who was in a tough family situation.] (113)
If Jesus is Lord, life has meaning. He makes the difference between victory and defeat, between hope and despair, between life and death. (115) Too many circles of philosophical thought end in a "horror of darkness." Inability to communicate is one of the great problems of existentialism. Like a figure in a nightmare, man wants to cry out, but he has no voice. Jesus Christ gives us a voice, a purpose, a center by being the Voice, the Purpose, the Center. He makes all the difference in the world. (116)
[See Romans 8:11; 2 Cor 4:7 Phillips version]
When Jesus is Lord we know the deep meaning of the hymn: In service which Thy love appoints There are no bonds for me; My secret heart is taught the truth That makes Thy children free; A life of self-renouncing love Is one of liberty. --A.L. Waring (118-119)
Ch. 7: It Works [Testimonies were shared of how God used this Cycle of Victorious Living message to give people a joy, a hope, a new way of life! It's very practical…because it's God's Word from Psalm 37!]
An excellent update to a really good original. I preached a series of sermons from Dr.s Scott and Earle's work, though I did revise the order of the Cycle of Victorious living in order to match that found in the Psalm itself.
Scott Daniels and Earl Lee share how to live the christian life fully relying on Christ and how that leads to more peace despite circumstances and more trust.
Ok, I should mention here that I'm not entirely unbiased in this review. I know Scott Daniels, and went to/worked at PazNaz for a number of years (the church where both he and Pastor Lee were head pastors in Pasadena, CA). I heard Scott's rewrite of this in sermon form in the years I was at PazNaz (and snippets of Earl Lee's sermons too...they dug out the old audio recordings and played clips at the beginning and end of the service during this sermon series at PazNaz), but since my husband was going through seminar and money was tight we didn't buy the book then. Over Christmas we saw the book in a store way over in Ohio and snatched it up. The book includes complete copies of both Scott Daniels' revision and Earl Lee's original version. Both include relevant and helpful illustrations and great encouragements in walking with the Holy Spirit guiding you and helping you in your Christian walk so you aren't just surviving, you're thriving. The cycle of victorious living is a diagram Lee came up with to illustrate this. I liked Lee's version, though some of the language and illustrations are a bit dated. I see why they asked Scott to write a revision, but I encourage you to go ahead and read both. They use different illustrations and explanations to get across the same points, but I think each reader is going to find further clarity in reading both. A further point many will appreciate is that both versions are short, sweet and to the point. The book in its entirety is not very long at all, I broke it up and just read a chapter a day (sometimes only part of one) and even with a week of travel during which this got left behind, I finished it in less than a month. Short, sweet, to the point, great thinking points and wonderful encouragement for your Christian walk.
Went through this book with my mentor... and I learned so much. Short and sweet. Sometimes that's what we need instead of trying to complicate God with all the theology behind everything... when really... All God wants from us... is.. well... us.
