1,096 books255 followersAndré Maurois, born Emile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog, was a French author. André Maurois was a pseudonym that became his legal name in 1947.
During World War I he joined the French army and served as an interpreter and later a liaison officer to the British army. His first novel, Les silences du colonel Bramble, was a witty but socially realistic account of that experience. It was an immediate success in France. It was translated and also became popular in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries as The Silence of Colonel Bramble. Many of his other works have also been translated into English (mainly by Hamish Miles (1894–1937)), as they often dealt with British people or topics, such as his biographies of Disraeli, Byron, and Shelley.
During 1938 Maurois was elected to the prestigious Académie française. Maurois was encouraged and assisted in seeking this post by Marshal Philippe Pétain, and he made a point of acknowleging with thanks his debt to Pétain in his 1941 autobiography, Call no man happy - though by the time of writing, their paths had sharply diverged, Pétain having become Head of State of the Nazi-collaborationist Vichy France.

He died during 1967 after a long career as an author of novels, biographies, histories, children's books and science fiction stories. He is buried in the Neuilly-sur-Seine community cemetery near Paris.

Dumas élete is kész regény, tarka és kalandos. Sok mindent elért önerőből, szorgalomból, energikus és bátor ember volt, ugyanakkkor hiú, sokszor öntelt, ám egy vidám, szeretnivalóan nagy gyerek. André Maurois rendkívül alapos, részletes életrajzot írt, az egész családról, beleértve Dumas tábornokot, akinek a haiti rabszolganő volt az édesanyja, plusz ifj.Alexandre Dumas-t is, aki szintén író lett. A nagypapa, a francia gróf:Davy de la Pallieterie, a szolgálónőtől született fiával hazaköltözik Franciaországba, a fiú aztán katona szeretne lenni, csakhogy a gróf szerint nem lehet közlegény ezzel a névvel, így anyja nevén, Dumas-ként lesz vitéz katona, később Napóleon tábornoka. A hiú császárnál kegyvesztett lesz, beteg is-így a család elszegényedik. Alexandre vidéken nő fel, fiatalon, nagy tetterővel nekivág párizsi életének. Szép szál, csinos férfi, életvidám és törekvő-állást talál, mint írnok, majd a színházi világ vonzza, darabokat ír, egyre sikeresebb.
Édesanyját segíti, végleg Párizsban maradnak, a művészvilág ismert alakja lesz, rengeteg szeretője lesz, de nagyon sokáig nem házasodik. Fia édesanyját sem vette el soha, ez elég trauma lesz ifjabb Alexandre-nek, akivel csak később lesznek jó viszonyban. Dumas drámái ma már kevésbé ismertek-regényei annál inkább. Egyre híresebbé válik, egy francia „ikon”, regényes és kalandos élete végén fia családja körében hal meg.
A három testőr főhőseiben egy kicsit az írót ismerhetjük föl: bátor mint D'Artagnan, jól ír, mint Aramis, nagyevő behemót, mint Porthos, nemes szívű, mint Athos.
Itt kell megemlíteni, hogy valóban nem mindig egyedül dolgozott, a színdaraboknál ő maga is volt „szellemíró”, majd mások lettek „bedolgozók” regényeihez, de Maurois szerint főleg ötleteket, kereteket kapott, és ő írta meg a szövegeket, párbeszédeket.
Maurois könyve egyszerre szörnyen érdekes, informatív és objektív-azonban elég fárasztó is néhol-nagyon sok a levél,korabei sajtókritika és idézet, tehát csak rajongóknak, irodalomtörténet, színháztörténet iránt érdeklődőknek ajánlom!

Another awesome biography of Alexandre Dumas. I had the brainstorming idea to read two biographies at the same time-- which worked wonderfully. Where the King of Romance made a passing comment here and there, this book delved in deeper with those periods in his life. I feel I have more of a well-rounded appreciation for Alexandre and his works. Now if only I could become even a quarter of the author that he was. :)
