A Box of Candles

Rate this book
For Ruthie's seventh birthday, Grandma Gussie gives her a box of candles. Ruthie has enough candles for each of the Jewish holidays and Shabbats in the year. When the candles are gone, Ruthie will be eight years old. But her seventh year will bring about a big change in her life--a new member of her family--which Ruthie will have to accept before she can truly celebrate her eighth birthday.

at first I thought this was hokey, but it was actually heartfelt! Ruthie doesn't want anything to change in her life, but when her grandma Gussie gets a new friend, Mr. Adler, so much changes. at first she resents him but as she learns more about how sweet he is and how much he and her grandma are good for each other, she comes around! punctuated with all the Jewish holidays!
