Found this while cleaning out a bookshelf. I remember reading this in the 90s and being so curious to go to Japan some day!
It's about 30 years later, I've been five times and married someone who lived there. Flipping through this now is a nostalgic trip back in time. The four stars is a nostalgia-heavy rating as most travel guides and the internet make a book like this odd in 2024, but it's an interesting view into culture in a way you don't see on the internet.
Also the essay on the homeless, and the Japanese police insisting there were no homeless people in Japan stuck with me for all these years.
Entertaining and informative but the puns tend to be formulaic and tiring after a while. After many years since this has been published, so much of it is still true.
