Wolf's Head Inn

Rate this book
Dale and Terry are very happy in their relationship, but both men hate their jobs. When the death of a distant relation drops a six-million-dollar windfall into Dale's lap, they decide to buy a lovely bed and breakfast on secluded Wolf's Head Island, Maine, and make a go of being innkeepers. For the New Year holiday season, Terry comes up with the idea of offering a "Murder Mystery Weekend" package. The venerable inn has a full house when an unexpected blizzard roars in, isolating the island from the rest of the world. But plans go ahead as scheduled... until they discover that the murder mystery may be more real than Dale and Terry had planned.

Predicable

A remote inn, on an island, conducting a murder mystery game for the guest. Yes, guess what happened.

..no surprises in this mystery

I liked this story about Dale and Terry, who hate their jobs, but when Dale unexpectedly inherits six million dollars they don't go all out and waste it. In fact, there is astonishinly little celebration.

What it does enable them to do is buy a bed and breakfast on a secluded island in Maine, something that will allow both of them to play to their strengths - and be their own bosses. Much of the book is about them settling into their new lives, dealing with setting up the inn and finding appropriate ideas to attract more guests. It's only an unexpectedly strong blizard during their "solve a mystery" weekend that adds some real excitement to their lives.

This is a nice story about normal people who remain laid back and realistic even though they are now financialy secure. That in itself is certainly unusual enough to warrant a book!

John Simpson has been a favorite author of mine since I first picked up his book Murder Most Gay. I have read most of the books he has written and every one I have read has fallen into two categories. Either I loved the book and have read it more than once, or I considered the book okay, but not one that I would reread. Not that the book would be bad, it just wouldn’t capture my fascination. My hopes were that Wolf’s Head Inn would fall into the first category. Unfortunately it didn’t.
I did like the main characters, Dale and Terry. What was unusual in their relationship in comparison to other m/m romance fiction I have read is that they started the story out as a long term committed couple. It was nice watching them deal with the everyday issues all couples have to deal with. There was also a secondary couple—Michael and Marvin. We got to see the beginnings of new romance with them.
The flow of the book itself was good as well with three definable sections. My problems with the story came in the first section. I felt that this particular section dealing with the purchase of the Inn, while necessary, was a little too long. Also, because of it, I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story itself. The book picked up with the second section where Dale and Terry moved to the Inn. This section was a nice view of how the two worked together. And then the final section dealt with the murder mystery weekend. A little more information on the guests in general, and expanding the mystery somewhat would have been nice and I felt that it ended prematurely.

A light read, pleasant with simple complications. A good story to read to de-stress. The main characters are sweet, and a bit one sided.
