This simple pattern book contains 21 patterns. A schematic is given for each. There's a little bit of everything: intarsia, Fair Isle, a teeny bit of eyelet work, and some cables. A lot of the patterns are unisex, and several are for kids. Most of the vests have basic, straight-sided shapes. I was disappointed that only one of the ladies' vests has waist shaping. The materials lists give yarn weight numbers, which are useful when substituting yarn.
Most of the patterns call for working flat and sewing side seams. For intarsia, this makes sense. Otherwise, it's far more sensible to work in one piece to the armholes, yet only a couple of these patterns are written that way. Even one of the *Fair Isle* patterns calls for working *a pullover* flat in two pieces and sewing together, which is madness.
There is a techniques chapter at the beginning, which, like all such additions to pattern books, is probably insufficient for beginners and superfluous for experienced knitters.
On the whole, it's a nice little book. Some of the designs are clever, and the rest are classic.
I have been on a knitting hiatus lately, and while the days are getting longer, and the threat of 10 degree days is fading rather quickly, I have hopes that I will be able to break away from my embroidering pillow cases project long enough to get hooked on a knitting vests spree. THere are several vests that I am intrigued by in this small volume--the Diamond Lace Vest looks like something to work up to--simple and cool looking--and the pattern stitch vest looks great.
