Embarrassed to be introduced to Ali Abbas Jalalpuri so late, I read the book in urgency to find the intellectual gems for which Jalalpuri is famously remembered and I must say that the experience was refreshing.

Jalalpuri's critique of Iqbal, though multifaceted, emanates from a single contention that Iqbal should primarily be read as a theologian (insofar as having faith-based premises and not literally a trained theologian in religion proper) rather than a pure philosopher. This contention, in my humble (and not so erudite) opinion, is refreshing in itself because it provides ways to understand (and possible reconcile) many presumed contradictions between various poetic themes and Iqbal's attempt to provide philosophical basis for reconstruction religious thought in Islam.

Overall, I find Jalalpuri's critique intriguing and very thought provoking and I am going to check Jalalpuri's other works despite my shameful reluctance to read philosophy in Urdu.

An alternate viewpoint for those who (like myself, and many other Pakistanis) revere Iqbal as a great poet, a philosopher and a key figure in the movement of Muslim renaissance in the subcontinent.

Iqbal ka Ilm-e-Kalam (Iqbal’s Scholastic Theology) is a well-balanced critique on the Iqbal’s thoughts from a philosophical point of view. Although Jalalpuri believed Iqbal to be one of the greatest poets of Urdu, yet he points out that there are at least three major reasons why Iqbal’s greatness in the realm of philosophy is misconstrued:

1. Iqbal’s scholastic theology, which tries to find those philosophical meanings in religious texts that are not there.

2. Iqbal was in favor of intuition over reason. Like Henry Bergson, Iqbal believed that reason is unable to understand reality and only intuition (Wajdan) and spiritual ecstasy can. This sounds good as long as it remains poetry. But believing such an approach provides any solid basis for Muslim renaissance is plain wrong.

3. Iqbal’s Romanticism, which, again, undermines reason and instead uplifts sentimentalism and individualism as the means to achieve nationalistic goals.

Intelligently and logically analysed different philosophical concepts irrespective of undue sacredness of any personality. Supremacy of intellect has rightly been said key to success instead of wandering in non practicable concepts and hallucinations.A good authentic informative book.
