Its’s a beautiful day at Rivercross Stables and Tara and her parents are spending a day relaxing by he river. They decide to build a raft which will they will use to float on the cool, calm water. When the horses escape from the nearby field, Tara’s parents run after them leaving Tara and Rocket (the sheepdog) unattended by the water’s edge. Tara decides that the water looks safe enough to try the raft out without her parents’ permission. Tara is so busy enjoying the sunshine and floating on her new raft that she doesn’t notice that the mooring rope has become detached and she begins to drift down the river. Will she ever reach the safety of the riverbank?
This book is one of many in the ‘Starcross Stables’ collection. This is a simple story that is charming but in my opinion lacks imagination. The size of the text and page layout is very well considered and is complimented with some very colourful and appropriate images. The author uses an overwhelming amount of punctuation throughout the text which might put some children off. On the other hand, an early introduction to such features will ultimately give children confidence to apply them in their writing. This books is aimed at children in yr 2 and would be ideal for use in guided reading. I would imagine that many children who live within the city would benefit from reading this book as it introduces vocabulary and concepts that do not occur within the built environment. In short, this book does the job but is a little dry and rather predictable in my opinion.
