The Source centers around a spring in the middle of the desert and is hidden inside the castle walls (of Makor [Ma Couer]) at one point for safekeeping by a deep and elaborate tunnel. The story is an excellent historical account, albeit fictional in detail of the different societies unveiled through an archeological dig. The story travels through many civilizations and includes in particular a great history of the Jewish people and their persecution throughout time, stemming from the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Christian Crusades et al. are a great part of the novel, as is the Muslim religion and these associations with the surrounding countries and their attachment to the wellspring in Makor.
I don't like to speed-read or skim but I began to do so with this book. James Michener is a great researcher and this book is invaluable for its subject matter. However, at page 3154 of 4186 I am going to take a break. It is an electronic book available from the library and I have borrowed it 3 times so far.
I do recommend the book highly especially to those who have a particular interest in history and religion.
