Having lived for many years in the western NC mountains, I am well aware of the large New Age community that has emerged in the region. This book is sort of a foundational work for understanding why so many people call Asheville the "Sedona of the South." It describes in great detail the earth energies and metaphysical aspects of the area. I wouldn't call myself a "true believer" of things New Age, but I am interested in understanding spirituality in today's world, so I read this book more out of a reserved and rather skeptical fascination for how Ms. Bryant described and explained the energy systems, as well as how the New Age perspective overlapped with (grew from? co-opted?) some of the traditional Native American beliefs. It's not a bad read, and so long as you don't really care about scientific or historic accuracy, it can be a fun route to understanding why there are so darn many crystal stores in Asheville.
