When the book starts the hero has just purchased a gun to take revenge on his business partner because of whom he went to prison. He runs into a desperate heroine trying to pawn something, she is on the run from her mobster ex-husband against whom she has stolen evidence. She asks for a ride, he rebuffs her. But fate conspires to throw them together again. Of course almost till the end the hero behaves like a typical man refusing to see the truth that his beautiful ex-fiancee set him up. I mean how dumb do you have to be? The heroine throws herself at him, confesses her love, basically demeans herself and he still goes to visit the ex, even feeling aroused by her. That is no hero, she deserved better. In the end when she tries to save him, he says more harsh words to her and leaves. Six months later with no grovel she takes him back -- barf!
