This book deals with contigency theory, or the leader-match theory. The leader-match theory hinges on two drastically different management styles: the task-oriented approach, and the relationship-oriented approach. The task-oriented approach functions well in situations with high situational control, as well as low; the relationship-oriented approach, on the other hand, functions better in situations with moderate situational control.
Situational control is composed of three major components: leader-member relations, task structure, and position power. Leader-member relations are the most important among the three, while position power is the least. A combination of these dictate whether a person is appropriate for the leadership task he's given.
