Hugo at the Window
PreSchool-Grade 1 Hugo the dog is left behind while his master shops in the stores on the street below their apartment building. Even though he is assured that ``I'll be back soon,'' Hugo watches at the windowat first patiently, then anxiously. Finally, with a look of woebegone resignation, he lies at the door, head on paws, awaiting the familiar click of the door knob. His friend does returnwith cupcakes and presents to celebrate Hugo's birthday. After the party, they go for a walk, and Hugo, wearing his new sweater, proudly carries his new rubber bone. This is a visual feast for young audiences. The flat watercolor drawings convey emotion and uncluttered but busy activity. They will be a fine springboard for language development in a one-on-one reading situation or during small group presentations. Children will have fun as they try to spot Hugo's friend through the shop windows. Additionally, early readers will find real encouragement with the simple, straightforward text which is appropriately placed (and spaced) to complement the illustrations. Hugo the dog was left at home while his friend went out for awhile. Hugo watched and waited at the window. The reader can follow where Hugo's friend goes by looking carefully at the illustrations. There's a surprise for Hugo at the end. Nice story for young readers.

Not Anne Rockwell’s best. Written in a very “See Spot run” style, and it took me several times before the illustrations made any sense.
