Arab Byzantine Coinage

Rate this book
This volume is based on a unique collection of Arab-Byzantine coins in the Khalili Collection, with additional material from public and private collections, most of which had not been published. The coins, minted in Syria and palestine between the Arab conquest and 'Abd al-Malik's reforms in the 690s are of exceptional interest as historical documents from a period marked by a scarcity of contemporary written sources. Initially based on Byzantine prototypes, their iconography soon developed into what may be considered as the first Islamic figural images.
