In a world where magic is commonplace, Edgar and Adelaide are two young adults who are struggling to understand where they will fit in. Edgar comes from a magical family, and hopes to live up to the reputation of his uncle, Magnus the Magnificent. Adelaide discovers she has serious magical gifts. Unfortunately, Chadwick is a kingdom where women are forbidden to use magic. Just as they are discovering the extent of their abilities, they find themselves thrust into a life-changing journey. With their masters, they embark on an epic adventure that leads them to each other, and to a world that may one day be without magic at all. Is it within their power to harness all shades of magic and secure the fate of their craft?
I received this book to review from Member Giveaways at Library Thing.
This is a fantasy tale of magic, wizards, dragons, councils, talking cats, druids, and mermaids. (Hopefully I got it all in there.)
Edgar is apprenticed to his uncle, the great wizard Mangnus. He is thrilled with the lifestyle and role that he is to play in his life. Being a wizard and travelling is more exciting than living in a city and settling down. The girl who he has had an eye on for years is finally paying attention to him because of his elevated status as a wizard apprentice. There is no zing and that relationship falls flat before it begins.
We meet Adelaide, she apprenticed to the herbologist, Hestia. Women are not allowed to have magical abilities. It is illegal. Adelaide is taken to a ball and while being kissed exibits magical abilities. Major problems and cover up are in order.
The paths of Edgar, Adelaide, Mangnus and Hestia converge when they work together to help the magic of the kingdom. There are several sparks that begin to fly and not all of them are magical. Well, love could be considered magical.
Overall, this is a very fun story. The language is simple and easy to follow. The character and plot development could have used some polishing. If you want a light read this is a great book.
Shades of magic is an epic fantasy, though a rather short one that tells the tale of edgar a mage in training under his uncle the master mage Magnus, and the tale of the herbalist apprentice Adelaide. About halfway through the book both stories come together when Edgar, Adelaide, Magnus and adeleides master, Hestia embark on an adventure to find a shard that will still the mages dwindling magic and also to save Edgars sick mother.
I enjoyed Adelaides story far more then Edgars. Edgar was really rather a jerk to Adelaide because she could do magic, and in thier world females that do magic are put to death. Females are seen as somewhat addle-brained and not adept to do magic, so it takes Edgar a rather long time to come to terms with treating Adelaide and Hestia as equals. He is also, a very typical guy, falling for the prettiest girl in town, a girl who wants nothing to do with him until he becomes apprentice and shes falling all over him, and he dosnt care even though he knows thats why shes giving him the time of day now! That really frustrated me. Edgar grows a bit by the end, but not enough to make me really like him.
Adelaide however, is a strong person. She is kind, funny, and determined. Initially it scares her that she can do magic but with Hestias reassurence and Magus helping she quickly learns that she can do good with magic. Adelaide initially has two guys vieing for her. Either of them were fine choices, but just not meant to be, as she now is a (secret) felon for using magic, and on her adventure. Adelaide also grows as the story progesses and it is nice to see such a brave and bold heroin.
Though there is magic, some swordplay and magic creatures, Shades of Magic could have added about 150-200 more pages, as it all seemed rather rushed. The fight scenes were short and you barely got into the battle before it was over. The romance was sort of fast as well, it sort of just happens and leaves you going 'what?' and scratching your head. The ending was good though and it ended at a spot that seems right. I dont know if there will be another installment or if the author is working on another book, but i look forward to more.
First off, I have to admit that I was very skeptical about this book. It was mostly because I was not fond of the book cover. Which led me into thinking that it would not be as much fun or interesting and would be a bore, resulting with me quickly tossing the book aside. I am happy to say that I really should NOT judge a book by its cover. Shades of Magic's literary structure was whimsical and detailed. The beginnings of the book was slow, but your then taken on a constant flow of a fairy-tale like story. I ended up feeling empathetic to Adelaide's struggle to prove herself to the wizard community, as well as to convince herself that she IS as strong as her mentor believes.
Shades of Magic begins with two stories; one of Edgar's voice: a town boy who does not believe in settling down, cares only to have fun and live life, whom is also a Wizard Apprentice to a Master Wizard which happens to be his uncle. And Adelaide's voice: an independant girl who is an Herbalist's Apprentice who later on finds out is a wizard herself. Women wizards are strictly forbidden and are surely punished! Half way into the book, these two stories weave together to create an adventurous tale of self discovery, hidden love, and the will to fight to reach a common goal. Set in the medieval times with Wizards, Druids, talking familiars, and dragons oh my! A light read that would make for a great bed time story! Ms. K.D. Wilson I'm sorry for doubting Shades of Magic, BUT I did enjoy every word. Thank you for wondrous read!
Shades of Magic is a very well written story following Edgar, Magnus, Adelaide, and Hestia. Edgar is a young man who has no real direction in life until he begins to travel with his uncle Magnus. Magnus is one of the greatest wizards alive who also happens to be Edgar's uncle. Adelaide is a young woman apprenticed to a very well known healer named Hestia.
When the wizards council meets about the fact that magic seems to be fading Magnus is given the task of figuring out what to do. He has an idea of how to fix everything so he and Edgar set out. They first travel to meet Hestia and Adelaide who can both use magic as well, but as women could be put to death for doing so. The group of four adventurers set out to retrieve a very special crystal hidden deep in a series of caves.
I truly enjoyed the characters interactions and the pace at which the story develops. K.D. Wilson has a lot of potential and I will be looking for anymore work of hers in the future.
This was an enchanting story of a young man named Edgar as he became apprentice to his uncle 'Gus' a renowned wizard of the land and Adelaide the apprentice of a local herbalist. At once a love story as well as a story of achieving ones dreams, this is a well-written fantasy novel for both youths and adults. I enjoyed it!

Shades of Magic - A fascinating story of adventure, love & magic. I read it, the 1st time, in one sitting! I didn't want to put it down. The characters are funny, realistic and easy to relate to as we follow them through out this amazing, magical world Wilson has created. (And I really loved the cat.) I hope Wilson continues the story, and we find out what's next for these captivating people.
The concept of the story is good, something I have seen before, but still a good quick read, the writing reminded me of a teenager writing a short story for English class though.
