Sempre divertenti ed estremamente ironici, nonchè curatissimi da un punto di vista letterario e linguistico, i romanzi di David Lodge: anche questo non fa eccezione, con capitoli ben equilibrati nella loro varietà di strutture e un tema principale, quello del mondo accademico e delle differenze fra il modello americano e quello inglese, che da italiana forse non sono in grado di comprendere alla perfezione. Le peripezie sentimentali dei protagonisti poi sono viste con un occhio assolutamente disincantato e risibile, risultando dunque comiche e assurde.
"Per l'amor del cielo, 'Playboy' non è pornografia. Ci sono degli ecclesiastici tra i suoi lettori. Ci sono persino dei sacerdoti che scrivono per la rivista."
"Saranno dei pastori protestanti."
