Living the Rosary: Finding Your Life in the Mysteries

by John Phalen

In this book of meditations on the meaning of the Rosary, Rev. John Phalen, C.S.C., invites readers to open their eyes and their hearts to God's presence in their daily lives through this ancient devotion. Much more than a "how-to" book, Living the Rosary employs scripture, the lives of the saints, and Phalen's pastoral experiences to lead readers into a deep appreciation of the personal import of the mysteries of the Rosary.

As president of Holy Cross Family Ministries--the organization founded by Patrick Peyton, the "Rosary Priest"--Phalen has traveled the world, giving retreats and workshops on the Rosary to thousands. His meditative guide situates each of the twenty "mysteries" of the life of Jesus within both biblical and modern stories of conversion and spiritual growth. Beginning with his own vocation story (an example of "annunciation"), Phalen offers twenty different stories--some scriptural, some personal, all of them practical--that will help readers better understand and live each mystery of the Rosary. An explanation of how to pray the Rosary is included.

When I twittered that I was reading this, Matt Swaim wrote me back and told me that Phalen "nailed it" in this book. I can't think of a better way to say it. Phalen applies each mystery of the rosary to his life in a tangible way, and then invites the reader to do the same. He finds applications for it in unexpected ways and places and I find myself considering things differently thanks to the perspective of this book. It gets my highest recommendation!

I found this a practical guide to explain the Rosary mysteries and apply them to my life. It is truly "living the Rosary." Easy to read. Reflective questions that are helpful. I highly recommend this. It would be good for a group to use if the group wants promote a devotion to the Rosary.
