This book was good it taught me about how to read poetry and to decipher Dickinsons poems, as well as help me learn about her life. Im hoping to read more of Dickinsons works especially her letters to Susan.

Author and librarian Audrey Borus approaches her topic and her reader respectfully. She brings together varying interpretations of most poems, citing the scholars who proposed the interpretations, while also providing for the "student" of the title interesting and relevant background information, and stretching the student-reader's capacity for a deeper understanding of poetry. This work enhanced my understanding of poetry and of Emily Dickinson. I was not, for example, familiar with a "squinting modifier." Very well done contribution to the Understanding Literature series. After reading this volume, I am inclined to try others in the series to see if they are also of this caliber.

Not only do we learn about her biography and influences, we are also taught how appreciate poetry. It is well written, substantial, and great for those who want to get inspired by Dickinson's poetry.
