Great mystery. When Vance’s doorbell rings during the dark hours of the night, he doesn’t yet suspect that he is about to tumble into an adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. The final will of Charles Darwin is stolen, and Vance’s quiet life is a thing of the past. And when he falls in love with the sister of the thief, and when she then disappears… his detecting instincts are in full action. Together with his one-eyed dog Eugene, Vance sets out on a journey for the truth. This leads him to a place he would never have thought he would visit. A mystery thriller that exposes the uncanny schemes of a religious organization that stops at nothing, not even murder. An action-packed detective story with a surprise ending. Highly rated by its fan-base (e.g. at Goodreads)… but utterly disliked by some religious people. Don’t read this if you are a religious fanatic! “A great book for all lovers of intrigue, humor, and man's best friend.” “I loved the character Vance, the love story is so well written.” “Great atheist story telling, intelligent and funny. It reminded me of my days in California.”
Clemens P. Suter is the author of SciFi and adventure. His first novel Two Journeys describes the adventures of a sole survivor of a coronavirus pandemic – written ten years before Covid struck in 2020. Fields of Fire (2016) and Rebound (2022) are additional installments in the series. Heavenland (2025) is a crime and mystery novel. Suter's novels and short stories suit all ages and combine straightforward adventure, a visionary look at our future, and dark humor. "I just couldn't stop reading. Suter's books ruined my marriage but saved my life."
A great book. What I particularly liked is that it is very rich in fantasy, and the story has very surprising twists that you do not expect as a reader. An explicit tribute to authors such as Dashiel Hammett and Raymond Chandler, the book shows the author's verve as a writer of propulsive crime. This is an adventure that I will not soon forget: with a hero brimming with self-confidence and determination, an archetypal crook, many comical and exaggerated situations and a deeply philosophical, positive message.
Lovable novel that shows the insanity of religious fanatics through a hard-hitting mystery story. Provides several intertwining story lines, humor and plenty of weird scenes. Mr. Suter has a lot of fantasy at his disposal and uses it to paint a beautiful adventure. I loved how the plot twisted and turned to a great finish.
