Introducing Transformational Grammar : From Principles and Parameters to Minimalism

Rate this book
The first edition of this book quickly established itself as one of the clearest and most readable introductions to generative grammar. Together with a complete introduction to the principles of Universal Grammar, it traced the major shifts of perspective that have influenced the developments
of the theory over the last forty years. This revised and expanded new edition introduces students with no previous training to Transformational Grammar. Covering the framework known as Principles and Parameters as well as the more recent framework known as Minimalism, it includes a range of new
exercises, making it ideal for students at all levels.

This book is really well-organized. The author gives readers very clear and precise explanations to the syntactic structures of English based on the syntactic theory. Moreover, it also attempts to apply the theory mentioned in English to other languages, which shows the essence of language. If you are interested in theoretical (formal) linguistics of Syntax (regarding PS Rules, X-Bar Theory, Theta Role, Case Theory, and Binding Theory), you may read it even if you do not have any background of linguistic knowledge.
