Tackling Life

Rate this book

Charlie Oatway was born into a family who were often in prison and always on the wrong side of the law. Unable to learn his lessons in school, Charlie was soon involved in petty crime and it seemed his life would follow that of his dad and uncles. He managed to become a professional footballer, but when he was sent to jail himself, it seemed that there was no turning back for this bad lad either.

Tackling Life is the story of how Charlie managed to turn his life around. Even though trouble was always just around the corner, his fighting spirit made him a success on the football pitch. And after becoming captain of Brighton and Hove Albion, Charlie went public with his problems with reading and writing. His book tells how people can be inspired and educated through the power of football.

Part of the ‘Quick Reads’ range to encourage adults to read, this title is a perfect example of this by using football as the hook to draw people in.

I picked this one up as Charlie Oatway played for my team Brighton and Hove Albion. It gives an interesting insight to a life of a footballer.

Oatway reveals he’s difficulty with reading, how football saves him from a life of crime and now community projects at the Albion has not only helped him - but improve others in the local area.

Picked up for a bargain 10p in WHSmith and part of the Quick Read series which are always good for a read. The journal of Oatway fitted well within the Quick Reads series as it provided a quick glimpse of the changes he's experienced throughout his footballing career and beyond. Considering his difficulty with schooling and learning through undiagnosed dyslexia, Tackling Life is well thought out and readable which in today's world of celebrity hype is quite refreshing and original.

I must admit from the cover I wasn’t so interested in reading this one. I’m so glad I did. He has led such a fascinating life. I really enjoyed the little peek behind the scenes of the professional football world too (in fact I wouldn’t have minded that being expanded as I have questions). I love the direction his work life took after he was no longer a pro player.

A 'Quick Read' , aimed at reluctant or developing adult readers, this is the autobiography of a professional footballer / coach who spent some time in jail. Personally, I found some of the football stuff a bit boring but my class of male adult learners enjoyed it and found it relatable.

A quick and good read. A very honest account about growing up in Shepherds Bush and the struggle Oatway had to get a chance in the world of professional football. Recommended.
