The Red Cross was originally founded by Swiss citizen, Jean-Henri Dunant, to help the wounded in battle. Now known as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, it has extended its areas of concern to the welfare of prisoners of war, victims of civil war, disaster relief, to health care, and help for disabled people. It is the largest organization in the world devoted to the care of people who need help, in all kinds of circumstances. Its emblems, the red cross and red crescent, are recognized all over the world as symbols of aid and relief.
