These lectures by Brigg beautifully illustrate the overlap in Christian thought in Alexandria. By providing a brief historical sketch of Alexandrian theology, Brigg is able to focus much of his time on Origen. The lectures on Origen illustrate just how Christian Origen was despite his Platonist context. Brigg does not seek to down play the fact that he, Clement, and the Jewish Philo before the two Christian Platonist were heavily influenced by platonic thought. This work deserves more attention as it provides a fantastic introduction into the world of Christian Platonism in Alexandria in the early years of the church.

The marriage of faith and reason, philosophy and theology, is an important foundation of the Christian faith. There was one suitable philosophy as a partner for Christian belief - the Idealism of the Platonists and Neo-Platonists. We find this is the only philosophy truly compatible with scripture, especially the letters of Paul and the Gospel of John.
