This is a Handbook for the generations of workers coming into the factories, mines, and mills - workers who will react to the uncertain life, ceaseless turmoil, and brutality that will accompany the arrival of the twenty-first century. It is a handbook for young people who, in growing numbers, are repelled by the racism, women's inequality, and other intolerable social relations reproduced daily by capitalism on a world scale. It is a book for fighters who sense that this social system, if not replaced, will lead to economic devastation, fascist tyranny, and world war. Above all, it aims to show why only the working class can lead humanity out of the social crisis endemic to capitalism in its decline. It shows how millions of workers, as political resistance grows, will revolutionize themselves, their unions, and all of society.
This was the book that prepared the Socialist Workers Party for its turn to industry--getting the big majority of members into industrial jobs. And it was a book SWP members and supporters sold in very large numbers at political events, picket lines, and so on. It went through three editions, and many printings.
Today there is a new book to essentially take its place--The Turn to Industry: Forging a Proletarian Party, having some new material, some old material that is useful but wasn't in this volume, and introductory material to explain where it all fits in. But this was done without taking this volume out of print. Some of it is a bit dated, but all of it was essentially correct. It begins to correct some positions that the SWP took in the 1970s, and further correction is made in Malcolm X, Black Liberation, and the Road to Workers Power and other sources. So, if one wants to go back to the politics of the 1970s and see what the SWP concluded it was right about, as well as what was wrong, this is still a very useful book.
