If you want to see something unique or interesting in Illinois, you're on your own. I learned more about what there is to see on Pinterest than in this book, and that's pretty sad. No mention of churches, lighthouses (there are several!), beautiful waterfalls, incredible lookouts, or what different kinds of hikes are at the parks (and leading to what). I just wish people understood that we all know what a mall/bowling alley is like. Every town has them. "Where to Eat" shouldn't be Steak n' Shake, Pizza Hut, and Famous Dave's - we have them all the way up here in Michigan, for the love of Pete. If I'm coming to Illinois, it's not to shop at Sears or eat at Bob Evans.
Our library didn’t have anything more recent, so I was stuck with this book that, because it’s over a decade old, is filled with places that no longer exist. I really just wanted to get some ideas for a few potential short girls’ trips during the school year, but this left me thinking I have seen everything IL has to offer. Some of the listings are laughable (a mall In Morris was an early nine) and the “places to eat” should be avoided (it’s all bad chains and cheap/gross food - why wouldn’t you try and spotlight local gems like Jubell’s or The Igloo instead of OCB and Steak n Shake or Sonic??)
It did have a few pages with listings of annual events in towns that warrant further investigation, but I certainly would never buy this, even if a current edition.
