Luha Quibodeaux never had much support from her mother. When a tragic event occurs, Luha’s mom makes a stand, reaching out in an attempt to protect her daughter. For the first time, Luha feels the love of her mother. Moments later, as Luha’s life slips away, she comes face-to-face with a woman who appears all too familiar. She soon realizes that this woman—is herself.

Everything in Luha’s world suddenly changes as she discovers that nothing is what she thought. In order to truly understand, Luha must let go of all prejudice, and come to terms with the deepest secrets in her own heart.

What does the future really hold? Is there life after death? Luha asked herself these very same questions; but the answers she found exceeded any comprehendible reality.

The book “Parallel” by Christy Elkins introduces us to 14 year old Luha, and it is clear from the first pages that Luha’s life isn’t easy. This special night is her birthday, and she’s reluctantly helping her mother Renee get ready for a date. As far as birthdays go, this is definitely not a good one, and bad takes a turn for worse later in the evening when Renee returns with Frank. He is a large and drunken man who quickly decides that he wants the child more than he wants her mother. To everyone’s surprise, Renee stands up for her daughter, and her act of courage sets off a chain of unexpected events where Luha soon finds herself staring at an older version of her own face.

As the story unfolds, it becomes impossible not to feel with the characters, not to wonder about their pasts and what will happen to them in the future. The storyline is original, interesting, and very well thought through, and Elkins makes you not just want, but need, to read one more page, one more chapter, just a little further, to see what will happen. I was completely captivated a few lines beyond the prologue, and didn't stop reading until I'd turned the last page.

“Parallel” is an excellent book, one of the best I've read for a long time, and with this book Elkins shows that she's more than an entertaining author; she's a great author. I’ve been trying to think of something to compare it to, but I can’t, because in all the hundreds or maybe even thousands of books I’ve read, there’s never been anything quite like it. The closest I can come is the series, “Incarnations of Immortality,” by Piers Anthony. It is not on the same theme, not at all about the same thing, but but somehow gave me the same feeling of both wonder and amusement.

" All of us are imperfect & there is good and bad in all of us. Even some of the villainous characters in this story share a little bit of goodness in at least one of them." Christy Elkins

Have you heard of an Omni-verse (parallel universe) that contains 12 different places? This story explores how these 12 different realms become a reality for a young girl named Luha Jane Quibadeux. Only 14 years of age, she dies tragically in a violent situation. As she dies, she meets another part of herself that is already in purgatory. The author, Christy Elkins, writing style helps the reader learn about the 12 different "parts" of an individual soul that learns about the different lifetimes on these different parallel universes. Each part of this soul has different names and experience different events in their lives that they learn from. Jealousy is felt through several of the souls that did not experience happiness in their lives. When these 12 different parts of the soul become one, in the end, acceptance and forgiveness are the lessons learned.

In an interview, Christy Elkins, explains the creative process that she went through as she wrote this story.  Readers will enjoy taking this journey with the main character as she learns life lessons that continue through her death. I thought Christy's writing was very well done, I never got bored with her prose. The descriptions were not overdone, they fit perfectly into the story not overpowering things but not hiding away either.

Now I have to admit, I am not a very religious person and thought with the 'disclaimer' at the beginning it would be overly spiritual but I have to tell you it was not and I was never uncomfortable with it. I really liked the story, it was a little bit over my head but even as someone who doesn't fully understand the 12 realms, it was a story that I enjoyed and don't feel as though you need to have knowledge on anything religious to enjoy this book.

I enjoyed the interactions with all the different Luha Jane facade's and found it realitively easy to follow along. There were a few areas where I was over my head and confused, but it never distacted me enough to put the book down!!

I absolutely loved this book! I have a thirteen year old daughter and I'm always preaching to her that the choices she makes now will affect her for the rest of her life, this story proves that in both the good and the bad perspectives - I love this book! It's a Must-Read for anybody and everybody!
