Useful book for me to use in my quest to learn the names of birds I meet while hiking! Previously, I've focused on learning the names of wildflowers and other plants encountered on my Wednesday all day hike. This has been moderately successful, as I'm now able to name and recognize about 20 different flowers including alstroemeria, sticky monkey flower, clarkia, some poppies and lilies. In addition, I know the names of sweet smelling plants found on the way such as the artemisia bush, chia and various bushes from the mint family. Now I'm expanding my bird knowledge from woodpeckers, hummingbirds, mourning doves, California quails and scrub jays to others such as the phoebe bird, swallows, magpies and the house wren with it's beautiful song. Each page has a full color picture of the bird, a map of where it lives (Western United States) and a description of it.

Handy Audubon guide. A good introduction to our common backyard species of birds. Quality of the photos is exceptional.
