I found this book to be very readable. I had known that Fiddler on the Roof was based on his collections of short stories about Tevye the Dairyman and that he had written other stories. But that was about it.
During the last few years, I'd started researching family history which also stemmed from the area of Ukraine in the same time period, I found depictions of place and time very interesting, although his experience was very different from my great grandparents' and grandparents'. It was interesting to think about how publishers didn't pay him royalties, his experience getting plays mounted, and his economic struggles in the U.S. as well.
At the same time, reading a book which was itself written in a very different area was really interesting to me too. The author passed away in 1985.
I loved this book. I love Sholom Aleichem's stories. This book by his daughter tells you all about the man, the myth and the legend. I could not put down this book and was aching for more.
I hate to say this, but I am giving up on this one. I see the importance of the man and the history represented, but I just couldn't get into it. I am going to pass it along to my mom to see if she might like it.
