This collection of biographies surrounds a theme of young people making a difference in their communities in recent history. The biographies are organized into four sections: Taking a Stand, Reaching Out to Others, Healing the Earth, and Creating a Safer Future. There is also a second part of the book, “A Handbook for Young Activists’ that provides helpful information for young people to change the world like the biography subjects did earlier in the text.

I thought this book was good. It had a a series of Biographies that were sometimes sad but filled with details. It was an inspirational book and I would recommend it to people that want to make a difference. I would read the sequel if there was one!

This book first provides examples of youths from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, religions and economic statuses that have taken action to influence change in the past. Then it provides personal narratives of young people currently doing something to make a change for the future. Young people whom are making changes include those doing it single-handedly and those whom have recruited many other to join their efforts. There are over a dozen personal narratives, telling of action in the past and present times. The book includes self-explanatory sections such as: “a handbook for young activists”, “ten tools for change” and “using tools together”.
Review: This book is relatable, it’s real, and it’s relevant for readers today, in 2018. It enables youths to directly apply knowledge gained through reading its pages to real life here and now.
Connects to: It's Getting Hot in Here: The Past, Present, and Future of Climate Change. Both books provide suggestions for taking action to affect change.

‘Delicious’ Quote:
“To have peace in the world, I think you have to look first at yourself, then at your family, then at your community and on out. To make a difference in the world, you first have to make a difference with yourself.” (pp. 48)
Students could use this book as a mentor text for writing in that it clearly and in straight forward presentation and language, has every genre of reading and writing within its pages!
In addition, each personal narrative within the book provides opportunity to teach just about every social justice issue you can think of!
