Award-winning storyteller Scott Morse's Scrap Mettle is the culmination of every spare moment spent away from the creation of his graphic novels and his duties at Pixar. This book is the reservoir of the products of a mind that won't empty of its ideas. Scrap Mettle -- a gargantuan volume of both electrifying images and smaller, personal thoughts -- is a must-have for any admirer of sketching and painting and a sure favorite of any follower of the retro pop art scene.
Scott Morse (sometimes known as C. Scott Morse or C. S. Morse) is an American animator, filmmaker, and comic book artist/writer.
Much of Morse's published work consists of stand-alone graphic novels, although he is perhaps best known for his epic series Soulwind, a story serialised in a sequence of graphic novels, which was nominated for both the Eisner and Ignatz awards.
I'm a huge Morse fan. Super huge. But this volume left me incredibly disappointed. There are a few good pieces mixed into the 400 or so pages, but most of them I found to be boring sketchbook and warmup work and nothing worth printing in a collection.
In fact, I recently turned down a free copy that was offered to me, so that should tell you something. Skip this and go read Soulwind or Volcanic Revolver. There's plenty of other amazing Morse work out there to be enjoyed.
