Wedding Feast of the Lamb

Rate this book
This text places the Eucharist in the universal context of world religions and shows how the Eucharist is God's response to the universal human quest for the perfect sacrifice of expiation, thanksgiving, and communion. It not only discusses the explicit Eucharistic texts of the New Testament but also shows the role and meaning of the Eucharist within each Gospel, within the theology of Paul, the Letter to the Hebrews, and the Book of Revelation. It cites forgotten texts and recovers surprising insights from the Fathers that disclose the link between the Eucharist and mystical experience, the presence of all the mysteries of Christ (in particular his death, resurrection, and his coming in glory) in the Eucharistic celebration. The systematic part is developed in dialogue with Protestant concerns regarding the Eucharistic presence of Christ and the Eucharist as sacrifice. It also shows the importance of the Greek Fathers' doctrine on the ontological transformation of the Eucharistic elements for transcending the impasse of the contemporary debate on transignification. This book is an essential resource for the study of the Eucharist in STL, STD, and MDiv courses and libraries. It is also recommended for pastors, deacons, and professors. An excellent comprehensive theological study guide on the Last Supper and the Eucharist from biblical, historic and theological perspectives. The essence of doctrinal development is perfectly demonstrated as the true meanings of the Eternal Sacrifice and Real Presence are gradually unravelled through the struggles of the theologians in 2000 years, and yet it remains the very same faith taught by the Apostles. In the last chapter particularly, the near-Platonic narrative of the divine love of Christ communicated through Holy Communion is a very potent piece of tear bomb.

Kereszty has a great approach to theological topics: a historical overview, cataloguing the treatment of certain subjects (in this case, the Eucharist) throughout Christian history, followed by a thoroughly systematic discussion that both summarizes and re-presents long-standing Church teaching in a clear and sensible fashion. Father Kereszty does an excellent job of providing a survey of massive amounts of theological reflection on this most central sacrament, and I was surprised at the areas in which it turned up--from the Scriptures to more contemporary figures. Any student of the Eucharist (Catholic or otherwise) would be well-served by reading this excellent piece of theological catechesis.

This book is, without question, the very best book I've ever read on the Eucharist! It is extremely thorough in analyzing the Old Testament prefigurements of the Eucharist. The development of the dogma of the sacrament and its many complimentary (not conflicting) symbolic meanings are explained in detail and its hermeneutics are first class.
I very honestly don't believe any Protestant pastor or brethren could read this book without concluding that the Catholic teaching on the Holy Eucharist is absolutely correct.

Quite simply, one of the best books I have come across on the Eucharist. Roch Kereszty, a Cistercian priest who teaches at the University of Dallas, has written a very thorough study of Eucharistic doctrine, beginning with its roots in Scripture and taking readers up to Vatican II and beyond. Perhaps not the book to begin with if one has no prior reading background in theology, but a great intermediate text.

The best book on the Eucharist I have ever read. If you are familiar with - and love - Scott Hahn's 'the Lamb's Supper', this book is the "next step"; the author takes what you've learned in the Lamb's Supper to the next level, delving deeper into the theology and history of the Eucharist.
