Liu was born in Changchun, Jilin, in 1955 to an intellectual family. In 1977, Liu was admitted to the Department of Chinese Literature at Jilin University, where he created a poetry group known as "The Babies' Hearts" (Chi Zi Xin) with six schoolmates. He graduated with a B.A. in 1982, went on to study for an M.A. and a PhD degree from Beijing Normal University. He became a teacher, literary critic, writer, professor, and human rights activist who called for political reforms which led to his imprisonment in the people's republic of China. In 2010 he received Nobel Peace Prize. (Note: It is correct to give his name as "Liu Xiaobo", as this is the proper Chinese name sequence. However, Liu is the family name and Xiaobo the given name. As Goodreads always assumes the family name to be the one after the last space character, the sequence should be turned to "Xiaobo Liu" to make sure the name is parsed and sorted correctly by Goodreads.)

In this system, the political power is condensed into one authority figure, who has unchecked power. Totalitarianism is when the person in power seeks to control every aspect of public and private life.
Sinking of Big Country: Memorandum to China/大國沉淪:寫給中國的備忘錄 is a collection of articles by Xiaobo Liu, one of the greatest thinkers, who has sacrificed his life for human rights, democracy, and freedom in China. All the pieces were written during 2006-2008 with analyses of the ins and outs of China’s current affairs and comparisons of the political periods after the Chinese Communist takeover in1949: Mao’s era, the post-Mao, the governments in the 1990s and 2000s. Liu’s keen eye has seen through how the economic rise of China affects the people’s life and the ruling system in China as well as the rise’s interaction with other countries. Hopefully, this book is being or will be translated into English and some other languages, so it can reach more readers.
