Erin frantically writes to her friend Dorrie, expressing her fear that the mysterious man her mother is dating is not an old family friend, as he claims, but a dangerous imposter. Reprint.
All of Carol Beach York's chapter books for children that I have read are haunting, and this one is no different. There's no supernatural element, instead there's a melancholy tinge.
Erin and Dorrie were never close friends, but now that Erin has moved away she writes letters to Dorrie. Erin's life is lonely because her father has died, she hasn't made any friends, and her mother is dating this really creepy guy. Erin knows there's something wrong about him, but no one will believe her. Luckily, with some help from Dorrie, this story has a happy ending!
My only complaint with this novel is that it is too short. It's an interesting plotline and I really felt for the main character. But I wanted to shake her mother for not having the tiniest bit of suspicion towards the sudden interloper. Also, her husband just died. Why is she in a whirlwind romance? It takes two children to wake her up. 🙄
