The simple path to wealth is as follows:

1. Steal the title of an extremely popular book.
2. Write just enough really bad material for plausible deniability.
3. Hope that enough morons like me throw on the audiobook in the car without realizing it's the wrong book.
4. Generate passive income.

It takes a special person to write a subpar finance book and steal the title of the best personal finance book.

Pretty much garbage, if I'm feeling generous. Amazing that a book published in 2022 could be so obsessed with cryptocurrency and NFTs. Also written in a condescending tone that seemed to imply if you're not already rich, you have no one to blame but yourself. And it seemed to think taxes were one of the worst things blocking the everyday layperson's path to wealth, while also not providing any support for this claim or advice to act on it.

I'd requested this book from Libby thinking it was The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins. It's not, though I think that's an understandable mistake. Even the subtitle is nearly identical. Whether intentional or not, the similarity is misleading and feels deceitful.

The book is simple, as the title promises. The advice is sound. This is a good choice if you understand sound personal financial principles and just need a refresher or a bit of motivation. It isn't a good choice if you are starting on a personal financial journey and need step by step instructions on how to pull your financial life together.

I picked this up because I thought Collins was the author (his book has the same name). But this one was short enough to give it a try. I'm glad it was short because it would have been a waste of time otherwise.

For the people looking for a simple explanation of finances, the book is too surface-level to explain anything. Money is helpful. Credit card debt is bad. Thanks, Copernicus. One of the author's suggestions to save money is to not get married until later in life. That's kind of the point of marriage. You find someone to go through the ups and downs of life with. To be poor with. Someone who loves you more than money. You don't find someone to fit into the life you've already created for yourself.

He did mention something that isn't brought up enough: invest in yourself. It doesn't matter what you're doing or where you're at in life. If you make a commitment to yourself, push yourself, and gain skills, you will come out ahead. Because you'll either be better at your job, get raises, or even if you find yourself unemployed, you are now a stronger person with more skills to be more valuable and resilient no matter what you do next.

Don’t get me wrong there was some great advice for personal financial management. But overall he was kinda all over the place and then settled into entrepreneurship about halfway through. If you wanted to read it I can save you the time by giving the better advice: open a high yield savings account, invest in CDs mutual funds and index funds, and look into ownership sharing programs for industries you’re interested in.

I’ve never rated any book 1 star but this book provides so little value for anyone with common sense who hasn’t been living under a rock the last 10 years. There are probably only 2 or 3 points in the entire book that I haven’t heard of before and I’m not a finance expert. So there’s very little of unique value for readers unless you’re a space invader looking to get rich on planet earth.

Furthermore, like some other reviewers, I highly suspect this book was written by AI. It has the kind of generic structure, mundane cadence, and lack of a personalized voice that’s typical of of AI writing. The “author” EA Sparks has no profile on Goodreads and the book appears to be self published. So I suspect the “author” doesn’t even want to admit that they “wrote” this book. The cover is definitely something AI would create.

Worse yet, the “author” titled this book very similar to an earlier book THE Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins. Several other reviewers noted they’d been searching for the earlier book and mistakenly got this “copy cat” instead. Bad form EA Sparks whoever you really are.

Enjoyment: 1/5

This book was giving red flags in the intro, but I gave it a few chapters anyway to see if it had something worthwhile to say. It did not.

It does that classic poor-people-are-poor-by-choice thing and no joke says that staying rich is harder than getting rich. Obviously does not site any data to support.

Update: realizing what happened here — this is a grifter stealing a book title from a popular book.

It felt like someone put “rich dad poor dad” into chatGPT and said “make it super short and even worse” also “take the title of another popular finance book and use it, hoping people get tricked into reading mine”.

One star for successfully tricking me.

Based on other reviews I believe I read the wrong book. One advantage is it's short. Is very high level without getting very detailed on anything in particular

This certainly had a lot of great topics, and was motivational. But I found that it was moreso just telling you general ways to grow your wealth and strive towards financial freedom, and less of the “how“. It gave general descriptions, but overall it mostly gives you ideas to do your own research about.

Gives surface knowledge of various investing terminology and business aspects. Short and simple. This book is fine if you're just looking for something to briefly discuss types of investments and side income. 2.5 star

Audiobook narration was fine.

Tricked! This book borrowed its title from the “real” book. This is some self-published AI trash.

The twist comes at the end when you realize this garbage is just some schmo’s attempt at passive income. Joke’s on you.

I need to read more books like this to know if it is good. However, I made it to the end. I got annoyed but it may be because it is about finances, a subject that tends to annoy me.

Pretty shitty to title your ChatGPT trash after a best seller. I’m embarrassed to say that I fell for it and bought the wrong book.
