Strategies for Effective Teaching

Rate this book
"Strategies for Effective Teaching" presents a thorough and current review of teacher planning, teaching methods, and teacher effectiveness research. Using the PRAXIS and INTASC criteria (teacher certification examinations) as a framework, the text explores how to effectively use the science of teaching in ways that ground an artful teaching ability. Teachers are both "born" and "made." The art of teaching emerges from the former; and the science grows out of the latter. The text helps prospective teachers see that teaching skills complement effective teaching; they are not the focus of teaching. Tips for teachers, research on effective teaching, and a focus on the learning paradigm (vs. the instructional paradigm) help pre-service teachers see that teaching is more than talking or telling. The new edition includes expanded treatment of technology, constructivism, and standards. New cases and updated research have been added, and a new book-specific Web Site accompanies the text.

Not impressed with this book. This was the required text for my last education course before receiving my post-bac teacher certificate. The class was called "Secondary Teaching Methods." I was very excited - finally a class geared toward middle and high school.

Unfortunately, the course did not live up to it's name. It just seemed a repeat of everything we've already learned in the program and didn't have any specific gear towards secondary ed!

Obviously my dissatisfaction lies more with the course than this book. Perhaps the text would be better for some sort of intro class. It just sort of skims over everything. But, it doesn't seem that is the intention since the final chapters talk about completing the program, finding a job, and being a teacher.

That said, I still this this book wasn't good. This edition is terribly outdated. It was published in 2004 so it's citing research and studies as far back as 10 years ago. That doesn't work with all the changes in education including NCLB.

The book is also outdated as far as effective textbook layout. It is text heavy with no color, and little in the way of sidebars, graphs, etc.

I can't say that I learned one thing from this book, and I sold it yesterday, the same day that I managed to read the last page. I can't believe that I had to pay $90 for a used copy of this. What a waste!
