About the author

Polly Hobson

8 books1 follower
Polly Hobson is the pen name of Julia (Jill) Evans, née Rendel (1913–2000).

“Polly Hobson was brought up in Kent. After her preliminary schooling, she went to stay with an aunt and uncle in France, to learn the language and to study painting. She returned to England and took her degree in history at Oxford. But painting was her first love and she became an apprentice in the studio of Primavera in Paris.
During World War II, Polly Hobson served in the W.R.N.S. in Dover, Glasgow and London. She was married in 1946 and has one son. The family now live in Sussex.” (from the cover of Titty’s Dead, 1968)

Although her father, Colonel Richard Meadows Rendel, was a professional soldier, Jill Evans had connections to the Bloomsbury group on both sides: her father’s uncle was Lytton Strachey, and her mother’s sister was Frances Partridge. Jill Evans was married to Captain Patrick Evans. The photographer and author Tom Evans is their son. The geneticist James Meadows Rendel (1915–2001) was her brother.
