Driven by the horrors of the Civil War, Houston Ballou fled Tennessee astride the majestic stallion High Fire, accompanied by his brother Ruff, sister Dixie, and the last four mares from their farm, one pregnant. Facing grave danger from both armies, they journeyed west in search of a new life. Their peril was further exacerbated by deserters lurking on the roads, men who would stop at nothing, not even murder, for a few coins or a valuable horse.
Gary McCarthy is the author of fourteen American historical novels and thirty-four westerns published by many of New York's major publishing houses. He has over three million books in print and continues to research and write his Canyon Country novels.
Growing up with horses and living in California, Nevada and Arizona, Gary is well suited to writing about the American West. He received his B.S. degree in Animal Science and an M.S. in Agricultural Economics. He has a keen interest in Native American cultures, especially the Hopi, Navajo, Havasupai and Haulapai who live in Northern Arizona.
Gary and his wife Jane live in Arizona and have often ridden horses and hiked in the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests. Gary is always looking for new stories set in the American West and considers the research to be among his most favorite pursuits.
The second book in the Horsemen series by Gary McCarthy. I enjoyed this a lot and thought it was better than the first one. Of course, the first book in a series generally has quite a lot to deal with in establishing the characters and settings. In this one, the remaining members of the Ballou family trek to Indian Country in what is now Oklahoma to try and rebuild their ranch. Quite a lot of adventure and excitement in this one.
A GM. Tennessee/Oklahoma Territory Western Action Adventure (CL) (THSB - 2)
GM. has penned a Tennessee/Oklahoma Territory western action adventure titled, "Cherokee Lighthorse" which begins with a family in Tennessee leaving for the west in Oklahoma Territory. They have a few problems enroute, but eventually arrive in Oklahoma Territory. The family picks out an area for their thoroughbred horse racers. The first year is difficult, but they manage to pull through getting the ranch buildings built and settling their five racers into a racing life. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
This book was so good I did not won’t to put it down. This story of this civil war family is so intriguing what they have to go thru to keep the family together. The worst was trying to have the brothers that was so different in personality,s From the same family. And the sister so rebellious at a young age. This is a book that is a must to read , you won’t want to put it down.
This book had a good story about a family having to leave their home in Tennessee during the Civil war to save the racing horses from the North and South armies. The only negative is the author choosing to use curse words using my Lords name in vain. Why can't he just state " he cursed". Cursing to me is just a lack of vocabulary.
when I was a younger lady I read the first of this series and fell in love with it. now as I get to enjoy them more I would.recommend this series to all my friends and family.
The story of the Civil War had a family struggle. Three family members struggle to carry on the family tradition. They won a race but there's still a war .only civil but Western.
