The IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC) provides to systems administrators a tool for planning, deploying, and managing IBM Power Systems servers. This IBM Redbooks publication is an extension of IBM Power Systems HMC Implementation and Usage Guide, SG24-7491 and also merges updated information from IBM Power Systems Hardware Management Version 8 Release 8.1.0 Enhancements, SG24-8232. It explains the new features of IBM Power Systems Hardware Management Console Version V8.8.1.0 through V8.8.4.0. The major functions that the HMC provides are Power Systems server hardware management and virtualization (partition) management.
If you want to do anything with IBM, not just the P series, then you will need this book. The information in this book is worth 100 times the price.
I came in contact with this IBM Power Systems HMC Implementation and Usage Guide while using the HMC (Hardware Management Console) to collect system dumps for evaluation.
Little did I know that it has a wealth of information for many other subjects that are superficially related to the HMC.
This book talks about setting up various configurations and operating systems. It also includes LPAR, DLPR, other LPRs, and even virtual systems. It tells how to install, set up, maintain, evaluate, and much more.
I copied the command line instructions onto a cheat sheet.
There are references to websites, other manuals, and many more reference materials for various questions on system performance and more.
Just reading the manual with a few side excursions will take better than 40 hours.
Even though it is up to date and tells you how to keep your HMC up to date, there are references to earlier products for people who just do not keep up with the latest technology.
One day this will not be the latest technology but will make a fine reference.
